I was born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina. I spent many years living in New Orleans, Oakland, and Atlanta, finally moving back to Asheville in 2014.
Growing up, I enjoyed writing, drawing, acting, and singing, among my other interests. An increasing focus on visual arts led me to earn a BFA in painting from East Carolina University. after graduating I worked in the restaurant industry, while pursuing a career in illustration that can best be described as “a series of unfortunate events”. However, I did make some good (even award-winning) art along the way, and learned a lot about how not to conduct business. I have now embarked on the journey of making and selling my personal work, and this website is a big part of that journey.
I love making art! Part of it is the sheer joy of creating something exciting and interesting from a pile of raw materials - paint and panel, pixels, or even everyday items that someone, somewhere, decided were worthless. It is a special thrill for me to take something that was heading for the landfill and highlight its value in a novel way; I hope to make the viewer reconsider the potential of things that they normally discard without a second thought.
Sometimes I’m trying to tell or imply a story with my work; sometimes, to encourage the viewer to concoct a story of their own. Sometimes I'm making something just to play with color, form, or material. I have never settled on a single genre or style; I prefer to work in and explore different styles, to keep my restless mind engaged and entertained.
Come on in, have a look around, and see what’s going on in my ever-active mind. You can check out my blog on Wordpress, where I talk about art (mine and others) and show a much broader range of my work. If you’re ever up in Asheville, you can also see my work at Woolworth Walk gallery downtown, and ZaPow! Gallery on the South Slope. Be sure to drop me a line if you have any questions or comments!
Cheers,
Dave
